- ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆My thinking was that going to a local branch I would get good service when applying for a HELOC ( home equity line of credit ). This branch is simply a branch of a LARGE difficult bank. The larger bank you will have to deal with and definitely takes any feeling of small town away from any experience I had with the local bank. From the start, the local banker filled in the form wrong in several places totally missing a spot where I was supposed to initial. The national office took 2 + months to finally get this error to me to simply initial. Next the local banker put on the application I was separated when actually I had been divorced for over 20 years. The national office wanted a copy of my divorce decree which I refused to give them. I was hesitant about the emotional maturity level of the local banker from day one. After apologizing to her twice for a mistake I had made, she never did acknowledge my apology. How would you feel if your apology was not recognized? Multiple requests for information such as my financial assets were requested. When I clarified which information I needed to send them, two weeks later the national branch stated that was the wrong information ! ? ! ? Another pieces of information they wanted was verification I had ON HAND, BEFORE FINISHING the application, immediately available $130,000 (which by chance I coincidentally had at that time. ) The line of credit was for $200,000. Now why would I ask for a line of credit for $200,000 if I had immediately available $130,000 ? This request made no sense since I had many times more equity than that in the property I was applying the HELOC for. Lastly one of the national bankers rudely stated " you know you are using this property as a credit card". Of course I know that! Isn't that one of the purposes of a HELOC ? After 3 months I discontinued the application. I have found another local bank which is so much the opposite of Wells Fargo. I realize my experience is complicated but I did not expect the process to be this cumbersome and uncomfortable.By Paul Mittelstadt, April 12, 2017
